Windward Instruments appointed Exclusive U. S. Agent for Landjager Swiss Police Watch

Windward Instruments has been appointed Exclusive U. S. Agent for the popular Landjager Official Swiss Police Watch, and the ultra exclusive Ricci Watch line. Hugo Pfluger, President and Chairman of Police Watch GmbH, and founder of HMP Watch LTD, Bettlach Switzerland, made the announcement on June 4, 2004.

"We are convinced that Windward Instruments has the necessary experience, and shares our philosophy in business" said Mr. Pfluger. "Building business relationships step by step, and providing our U. S. customers the best possible product, are our mutual goals".

Windward Instruments is a growing wholesale and retail distributor based near Lake Michigan, currently handling the U. S. launch of the Ocean Clocks line of localized tide clocks. "We plan to offer the Swiss Police Watches to U. S. customers through our retail division, BellClocks.com, starting in July. Our wholesale division will begin marketing to larger retailers at that time as well".

The Landjager Official Swiss Police Watch has proven very popular in Europe. Since 1997 the Swiss Police force has worn them as part of the uniform. This line of watches has expanded to over 40 different models at present. Their most unique model, is the popular Swiss Police Hyperbar Dive Watch. Cracker Event on 2011-07-24 20:00:00

Supporting Acts: Wormburner

Cracker

Cracker, the group that veritably introduced brash irreverence and irony into alt-rock, are back and in top form on their 429 Records debut, Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey. This rich new trove of sharp-witted songs showcases a bristling, late 70's - early 80's power pop punk aesthetic which hits as hard as it did at the band's formation 17 years ago. Eight albums (one platinum and three gold) and a barrel full of anthemic hit songs later, Cracker endures, using their ability to weave decades of influences into an album that is seamlessly riveting. In Sunrise..., long-time partners David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, 12-year Cracker drummer Frank Funaro and bassist Sal Maida (since 2006), train a watchful eye on the current socio-musical landscape as they weave an eerie yet strangely soothing story of escapism, apocalypse and renewal. Friends John Doe, Patterson Hood and Adam Duritz (whose mega-band Count ing Crows was once produced by Lowery) make spirited guest appearances. The recording was helmed by Athens, GA-based producer/engineer David Barbe, a longtime friend of Lowery who has manned consoles for the likes of Son Volt and the alt-Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. The explosive title track that wraps the 11-song collection is thematic, belying its seemingly cheery title to take a tough-edged look at the precarious times we live in. Ever the observant storyteller, Lowery calls it like he sees it: the affluence and wealth America seemed to have these past decades was built on a mirage. The sun shines a harsh light on a landscape of decay. The golden age, the promised land, the land of milk and honey, never materialized. For Sunrise..., Lowery and Hickman took a new approach to their creative process, joining Funaro and Maida to write most songs from scratch. (Whereas on previous albums, Lowery and Hickman would bring near-finished tracks to the rest of the band.) Cr acker were self-disciplined- writing together one week every two mont hs, between tours, for a year. The goal was to work on two songs per day-and somehow, the combined force of their distinctive and mutual influences gave rise to a crackling, raw musical factory of sorts. Says Lowery, "The coolest part of making the new album was the self-imposed time structure we created, the fact that we all gathered to write these songs like it was an actual job. At one point, when we had four songs that needed lyrics, Johnny and I went to the legendary punk studio, The Blasting Room, in Ft. Collins CO, and rented the B room, where we stayed until we had the right words. It was refreshing to do it this way, to challenge ourselves to write with the clock ticking. It was like starting a band and committing to a rehearsal time. We weren't kicking back on an island in the Caribbean, waiting for the muse to hit us. We got down to work, found the punk and glam rock in our blood and woke up to Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey." Considering drumm er Funaro's background playing with The Dictators and Joey Ramone, and bassist Maida's background with Roxy Music and Sparks, it was inevitable that the new album would acquire its own unique edge. "It was a little different involving Frank and Sal's musical tastes and their background from the get-go," says Lowery, "but this led us to realize the common element we all share. We all came of age playing power pop-punk and that early new wave stuff. Once we got on this path, it started surfacing in so many songs that it became a thematic element for the whole project. We all started playing music in that era so we weren't surprised when those sounds started rising up. Sunrise...isn't the 'Cracker punk record' but it's definitely got that time stamp, the '78-'83 flavors, all over it. The other thing we did differently was actually playing all the songs in concert before ever committing them to digital. Most bands do the alb um first, then take the tunes on the road." "In a lot of wa ys, the methodology behind this album brought us all back to when we all started our early bands, when the opportunity to write and record albums came after playing tons of live shows," adds the Richmond, VA-based singer. "I think one of the reasons Cracker has survived this long when so many of the bands that started in the early 90s faded is that we've always made the record we want to hear right now. We've always had the belief and confidence that others will feel like we do. Eclecticism was the norm for bands in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's, and that freedom leads to great bursts of creativity and the potential to make classic albums that stand the test of time." The first album track explodes with a slicing guitar riff from Hickman. "Yalla Yalla" is a colorful rumination on an Arabic phrase meaning, "Let's go." Lowery heard U.S. soldiers greeting each other this way at the Atlanta airport. "Like rock mus icians, soldiers in every era have their own language of bravado and machismo," he says. The band dives deep into the punk on the frenetic "Show Me How This Thing Works," a song inspired by Lowery helping a friend with a quantitative finance problem; the singer is proud that he was once a budding mathematician. "Turn On Tune In Drop Out With Me" is a lilting pop/rock reminder that in these precarious times, many may feel like returning to the bold escapism of the 60s, of the hippies who left the rat race behind to "drop out" into spiritual refuge. The blistering "Hand Me My Inhaler" finds its hapless protagonist blustering at an ex-girlfriend's door, "gonna reform the band without you." Hickman says of the blues-funk "I Could Be Wrong, I Could Be Right," "When I hand David a melody like this one, I have no idea where he's going to take it, and I love that. Suddenly the devil and members of the Lewi s and Clark expedition were caught up together in some sort of a psyc hedelic love conspiracy." "Time Machine," a black-booted, Celtic-riffed, early-punk kick to the jaw of any pretenders, was inspired by a conversation Hickman had with Black Flag and Descendants drummer Bill Stevenson (who co-founded The Blasting Room studios). Hickman and Stevenson both realized that they had been caught up in the same early 80s punk rock riot at a legendary Dead Kennedys show. It's a message to today's punks that they perhaps couldn't have survived what the previous generation endured. "I took a couple of billy club hits that night," Hickman says, "I got off easy." Punk-and-now-Americana legend John Doe harmonizes on the throbbing, surf guitar driven, "We All Shine a Light." This swarming, Buzzcocks-like rocker is a comment on multicuturalism and tolerance, by way of an ode to Pakistan's cricket team, the Peshawar Panthers. Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers duets with Lowery on the swampy, fo lk-Americana of "Friends," a drunken tale of dysfunctional but loving friendship. One of the album's more poignant moments arrives when Adam Duritz guests, singing alongside Lowery on the romantically selfless "Darling One." The stomping, harmonica-laden "Hey Brett, You Know What Time It Is" came from a sardonic line uttered to Lowery by Built To Spill's Brett Netson, during an exchange of ever-escalating shockeries. Lowery recalls, "He walked into our dressing room and joked, 'Will we know when it's time to start dragging rich people from their cars and killin' em'?' For Frank and me, it grew into a text message exchange and later a song." A brief rundown of Cracker's history: Lowery, in the mid-80s, in Santa Cruz, California, formed Camper Van Beethoven, and their "Take the Skinheads Bowling" became an instant college radio staple. When CVB disbanded on tour in Sweden, following their second major label release, Lowery formed Cracker with his longtime friend J ohnny Hickman. (The pair had met on the local music scene as teenagers in Redlands, CA.) Cracker's emergent sound had less in common with Camper's exotic excursions and was more in synch with the Kinks and Southern roots music. They released their self-titled debut on Virgin, and following the #1 Modern Rock hit "Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)," the band became a minor commercial sensation (complete with then- significant MTV exposure). The platinum-selling Kerosene Hat contained the enormous, era-defining hit single "Low," as well as "Get Off This," and "Eurotrash Girl." When the dust settled, Cracker found themselves with an ever-growing, devoted following both in the U.S. (where fans refer to themselves as Crumbs) and throughout Europe. Today the band stays well connected to yet another generation of fans via internet, many of whom were kids when these alt-rock godfathers were first ruling rock radio.

THE LEISURE SOCIETY Event on 2011-10-28 00:00:00 Harmonic presents
THE LEISURE SOCIETY

+ guests

“The Leisure Society’s delightful second record arrives as a wonderful surprise: one leg in and one leg out of the current folk-pop scene but utilising their wide stance to confidently deliver a record bedecked in beautiful, swirling melodies and deftly constructed vignettes. The whole record plays out like a sumptuous stage musical: stocked full of dramatic twists, surges of strings, woodwind cascades and a continual desire to find new and improved ways of bringing a song to a mutually satisfied conclusion.” –Drowned in Sound

“Please don’t forget about the past/The hungry years we hid beneath the sand,” says The Hungry Years, one of many standout tracks on Into The Murky Water, the new album from London’s The Leisure Society. It’s fuelled by a pointed, bittersweet kind of melancholy, the sort of feeling understood only by people who, after years of standing on the sidelines, have started to see their dreams come true – people like Nick Hemming and Christian Hardy, the creative duo at the heart of the band.

From the moment the title track creeps in with bouncing bass, flurries of flute, jazz drums and Tim Burton-style backing vocals, it’s clear that something has changed since last we met them. A year in the making, Into The Murky Water is the sound of The Leisure Society gone widescreen.

The band’s 2009 debut album, The Sleeper, came from a delicate place. Its lead track, Last Of The Melting Snow, was the product of a lonely New Year’s Eve Nick spent at the point of post-breakup desperation. Into The Murky Water comes from a happier starting point, but looks back on the bad times too. “There’s a bit of nostalgia there, a thought that it wasn’t so bad after all,” says Nick. “Without all these crap things happening, without the years of crap jobs and playing in bands that never g o anywhere, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

For songwriter Nic k, the journey to this point has taken more than a decade. As a teenager in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, a mutual friend introduced him to the film actor Paddy Considine. “He was from the wrong side of the tracks really, hanging around with all the petty criminals,” remembers Nick. As the young guitarist’s creativity rubbed off on Paddy, Paddy’s wild side rubbed off on Nick. He soon found himself bunking off from sixth form to jam with Considine and his art college friend, director Shane Meadows, and together they formed the indie band She Talks To Angels.

“If it hadn’t been for Shane I probably never would have become a professional musician – and I probably wouldn’t have had ten years of misery,” laughs Nick. “I was supposed to be going to university but Shane was an infectious personality and full of big ideas. I deferred for a year to be in the band, then another year, and then the band broke up. He wasn’t popular with my mother.”

Following the split, Nick was scooped up by local indie hopes The Telescopes, who were signed to Creation Records. “Our first gig was with Blur in Switzerland,” remembers Nick. “It was the first time I’d ever flown. I was a bit overawed by the whole thing.”

But luck was not on Nick’s side, and The Telescopes split having not recorded a note since his arrival. Nick retired into himself, taking manual jobs and working on music that wasn’t necessarily intended for anyone to hear. Shane Meadows remained a supporter, hiring Nick to score 1999’s A Room For Romeo Brass and 2004’s Dead Man’s Shoes, but Nick was losing his confidence. By the mid 2000s, he hadn’t sung in front of anyone for years.

Everything changed with the arrival of fellow Burton-on-Trent exile Christian, the outgoing yin to Nick’s shy, reserved yang. They first played together when Christian was still a teenager. “I idolised Nick because he was always in the bands my bands were supporting,” s ays Christian. “I was so nervous when we jammed I didn’t impress him very much.” Unlike Nick, pianist Christian was keen to escape the Midlands town. “Being a sort of fey, late developed poetic type in Burton-on-Trent, you got used to getting beaten up a few times,” he laughs.

Christian moved to London in 2004 with a development deal for his art-rock solo project, Christian Silva. Two years later, when Nick found himself at his lowest ebb following the gargantuan break-up that spawned Last Of The Melting Snow, Christian lured him down to London to join in, and even offered him a couch to sleep on. When his housemates’ patience ran out, Nick moved into Christian’s tiny bedroom. “The only way to fill the awkward silence was for Nick to sing these beautiful songs he’d been writing,” says Christian. “As soon as he started playing them, I felt like I’d found my calling. I felt like they needed to be heard.”

Finding likeminded souls in Brighton’s Willkommen Collective, headed by Tom Cowan of Shoreline, they released T he Sleeper on Willkommen Records, with limited expectations. “Most of the songs are just really cathartic,” says Nick. “I wrote them because I was thoroughly miserable and it was comforting to write them. I never believed in my wildest dreams that it would lead to where it has.” Christian was more confident. “I knew there was an audience out there for us,” he says, “which probably tells you all you need to know about our different personalities.”

The catalyst was the single, Last Of The Melting Snow, which was championed by Radcliffe and Maconie on Radio 2 and Elbow’s Guy Garvey on 6Music. Within months of its release, Nick had been nominated for an Ivor Novello award, to rapturous media attention. “TV crews came to film me at the carpet warehouse where I was working packing carpets,” says the singer. “I suppose they wanted me to be the new Susan Boyle. It got really embarrassing after a while but my co-workers loved it – they were all standing in the background waving at the camera.”

Those days in the warehous e were a productive time for Nick, who would scribble down lyrics and ideas on scraps of paper as he went about his business. His leaving do was another bittersweet moment. “A lot of people got made redundant at the same time, so it was odd to be leaving to go and live out my dream while others were losing their jobs,” says Nick. A song on the new album, I Shall Forever Remain An Amateur, is written about the experience.

Nick’s world was to keep changing as the snowball kept rolling. The album, re-released on Full Time Hobby, became a slow-burn success story. Richard Thompson invited the band to play at his Meltdown Festival (“He gave us a weird, cosmic pep talk about the nature of relativity and our time on earth before we went on stage,” says Christian. “We drifted on stage wondering whether we existed or not,”). There was another Ivor Novello nomination. They packed a tent at Glastonbury. Even Brian Eno declared himself a fan. “We went to his Chr istmas party, which was quite an experience,” says Christian. “As I watched my girlfriend doing the conga with Brian Eno, I thought, life’s gone in a strange direction.”

By the time they came to record their second album, Nick and Christian were able to come out of the bedroom studio and record with members of the crack six-piece live band they’d assembled, fleshing out their sound to something fuller and richer. That’s Bas Hankins (drums), Helen Whitaker (flute), Darren Bonehill (bass), Mike Sidell (violin), William Calderbank (Cello) and newcomer Amy May on Viola – now more a part of The Leisure Society than ever before.

The …Murky Water sessions began in earnest in May 2010 at a mock Tudor mansion in Kent, where the rhythm parts were thrashed over the course of five days with just the neighbourhood bats for company. “We wanted to do a bit of a Led Zep, set all our kit up there and wig out,” says Christian. “It was quite nice to rock out in a coun try space, because the silence is quite noisy.”

After two weeks g oing wild in the country, they spent the rest of the year working at Trinity Music College and Nick’s apartment in Greenwich, crafting an album that’s got a surprise around every corner. “We’ve agonised over every squeak, every noise, to a point of lunacy,” says Christian.

The strange, new world Nick and Christian find themselves in is reflected by the album’s title, which came to Nick while reading Albert Camus’s The Fall. “I always felt Nick was watching from the sidelines in some way,” says Christian. “On this album, he’s immersed himself in all the things he was looking at. It’s more colourful and vibrant, and it’s full of happiness and terror. He’s the guy poised to dive on the cover. He’s heading into the murky water.”
